Never use BITLY. They have a home-cooked algorithm that flags ‘affiliate’ links with big RED Warnings. It seems that they are wrong more times than they are right. I urge you to re-check all your BITLY redirects every few months to make sure they’re not flagged. TINYURL seems to keep clear of the link-policing role that BITLY has taken on.

Should i use a 301 redirect when changing my home page title?

    My Question:
A link on a side page ranking 0 (Main page ranking 3) pointing back to my site,
Does Google consider this a good link, or would this link have more power coming
    from the Main page?

    Kind Regards

New redirect sites crop up every day, make sure you pick one that does what you want it to.

Thanks for the clarification Matt, I feel like lots of folks can’t grasp this concept. Your video will be great for future reference…

  9. bsmcnair says:

It depends on if the shortening service is using 301 redirects or not, Google will just follow whatever the shortener is doing.

  10. pcrackenhead says:

No, as long as the URL redirect services use a 301 redirect, the site doesn’t get counted, it flows PageRank and everything else to the site that they redirect to.

  11. BIGELLOW says:

The actual (destination) address gets the PageRank. The shortened URL is treated as if it never existed (except to be followed to determine where the link is supposed to really go.) In other words, any TinyURL link is treated as if the larger link to the original address is really embedded in the page instead.

  12. todnyc says:

    I still don’t get it –
So does Google rank the TinyURL address, or the actual address (or do both get a separate ranking)?
