คำว่า ความบกพร่องในการเรียนรู้ ค่อนข้างกว้าง และไม่มีนิยามเฉพาะ คุณอาจจะบกพร่องแค่การอ่าน การเขียน การพูด หรือการคำนวณ หรือทุกอย่าง ปัจจุบันนี้บางท่านถึงกับรวมเอา โรคสมาธิสั้น เช่น ADD หรือ ADHD (เด็กสมาธิสั้น และhyperactivity)เอาไว้ด้วย เนื่องจากมีความสัมพันธ์กัน ถึงแม้ว่านิยามของโรคความบกพร่องในการเรียนรู้นี้จะต้องแยกโรค ADD ออกไปก็ตาม และจะต้องแยกโรคอื่น ๆ ออกก่อนจึงจะวินิจฉัยโรคความบกพร่องของการเรียนรู้ได้ โรคที่ต้องแยกก็เช่น ปัญญาอ่อน ออทิสติก หูหนวก ตาบอด หรือพฤติกรรมผิดปกติ
โรคความบกพร่องในการเรียนรู้ จะมีลักษณะร่วมที่เหมือนกันคือ ความผิดปกติในสมอง ในส่วนที่เก็บ และวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล เรียกง่าย ๆ ว่าปัญหาในการเรียนนั่นเอง ทำให้เด็ก ไม่สามารถ อ่าน หรือเขียน หรือคำนวณได้ และจะมีปัญหาต่อมาถึงทักษะ ความสามารถในทางสังคม และอาจมีปัญหาอื่นตามมาเช่นซึมเศร้า ขาดความยับยั้ง ต้านสังคม
ความเข้าใจผิดอีกอย่างของโรคเกียวกับการเรียนรู้ คือเข้าใจว่าเด็ก เรียนช้า หรือความฉลาดน้อยกว่าคนอื่น ทำให้เด็กและพ่อแม่ขาดความเชื่อมั่น ในตนเอง ความจริงก็คือ เด็กที่มีความบกพร่องในการเรียนรู้ ระดับสติปัญญา และความเฉลียวฉลาดเป็นปกติ หรือสูงกว่าค่าเฉลี่ยด้วยซ้ำ
